A research reveals that extra virgin olive oil protects against breast cancer

A Spanish research called Predimed revealed the importance of the Mediterranean diet, especially extra virgin olive oil for cancer prevention. With the use of this type of oil, a cancer risk reduction of 68% was detected.

The investigation was launched in 2003 with 7,447 participants from 6 autonomous communities. It revealed that 4 spoons of extra virgin olive oil per day are sufficient as a measure of protection. In a following research made between 2003 and 2009, 4,200 women from 60-80 years old with “high risk of cardiovascular diseases” were divided into 3 groups. The first is the control group, which was instructed to follow a Mediterranean diet. Second group followed the same diet but with extra nuts and other types of dried fruits. And the third group also followed the Mediterranean diet but with extra intake of extra virgin olive oil. The incidence of breast cancer between the first two groups is similar. However, according to the author, the incidence dropped by 32% in the third group.

Among all the women, only 35 had breast cancer in the next 5 years (the number is very low taking into account that one of every eight was foreseen as a breast cancer patient, according to the statistics).

Undoubtedly, it is another encouraging find that confirmed the health benefits of the olive oil, which from Ybarra we have always supported and reported through different channels of ours.
